As an amateur and a well-wisher of the souls suffering from mental illness, I feel that medical science needs to come up with a satisfactory explanation for the cause of depression. I am skeptical about the ‘chemical imbalance theory’. Is there a verifiable and measurable chemical balance in the brain? What is the proportion of different neurotransmitters that makes optimal mental health?
Is not the human body a self-organizing system with interdependent parts? How can the chemical balance, if it is there, go awry without a specific cause?
Some scientists are looking at inflammation as a possible cause of depression. If science can discover the real reason for depression it will help to remove the stigma that is attached to it. That is to say, depression is a physiological disorder although it ultimately affects mental health.
