Distraction is per se not a vice, but only if we are conscious of the distraction and purposefully engage with it.
It cannot be disputed that the Internet’s architecture is distractive. The Internet giants like Google and Facebook will not make any money if refuse to look at all their offerings. Focus is their enemy.
As rightly stated, throughout history, the arrival of every new technology has been greeted with the wailing of Cassandras and doomsayers. But digital technologies seem to be of a different league. Like a double-edged sword, they have the awesome potential to empower us as well as harm us.
The reduction of attention spans because of screen based activities is real.
But as you have stated, responsible use of technology is the key to manage the distractions. The question is will the Internet’s addictive and sumptuous fare of distractions let us exercise our autonomy?
