A quote that made me sit up and take note

I am a great fan of quotes. They pack so much wisdom in so few words.

Pinterest sent me the above quote. These lines are from a poetry collection “Daring to Take Up Space” by Daniell Koepke, the founder of the Internal Acceptance Movement space. The young clinical psychologist and writer seem to possess wisdom far beyond her age. She emphasizes self-acceptance through vulnerability.

I am amazed at how a few lines could compress so much thoughtful wisdom. Let me try to decipher and demystify the quote’s powerful message.

Autonomy

Humans crave autonomy, which is the defining paradigm of a dignified existence. We all like to claim, “I am my own master”, socially, physically and psychologically.

Live for our own selves

Independence of thought and action sets apart the strong from the timid. Following the herd and travelling the beaten path is not an exciting journey that will unfold excitement and happiness.

Emotional self-awareness

We must keep a close watch on our feelings as they arise in the mind. Emotions should not take us as their hostage.

Our emotions don’t need validation

We must accept our emotions are legitimate underpinnings of our personalities and life experiences. We need not seek external approval to validate our feelings.

Don’t let others judge our feelings

Nobody can really, wholly and truly understand our feelings because they arise in our inner realm. There is no need to be defensive about why we feel what we feel. If people try to trivialize our feelings, tell them to mind their own business. Or ignore them.

Vulnerability is not weakness

Vulnerability is an authentic expression of our inner selves. We are vulnerable when we let go of pretensions and contrived social behaviour.

Emotional acceptance leads to healing

Once we accept our own emotions, we can try to test them for their desirability and suitability. We can hold on to positive emotions and avoid pampering negative emotions.

Thanks for reading. Can you add more to what I have said about the quote?
