“There are dangers at both ends of the credentialist spectrum.” (ClearerThinking.org) Experts have credentials—academic qualifications, formal training, and practical experience in their respective disciplines. Their opinions carry more weight than those of non-experts, even if the latter have engaged in deep self-study and independent research. People’s beliefs about credentialism and non-credentialism exist on a spectrum. At one extreme, people will blindly believe what the experts say. On the other end, others say formal education does not equip people with proficiency and knowledge.
